"Shit, we're getting promoted!" read a banner in 1. FC Union Berlin's stadium at the Alte Försterei in 2019. Four years later, the traditional East German club qualified for the Champions League, accomplishing something few would have expected. Amidst all the euphoria surrounding the triumph, however, the pressure to remain strong both athletically and financially is also increasing, as is the fear of an identity conflict between tradition and change.
The fact that the football underdog from Köpenick still manages to retain its magic is largely due to the people behind the scenes who tirelessly and enthusiastically keep things running. Always by their side: a loyal fan community ready to unconditionally follow their club's path.
