Oliver Ruhnert was born in Arnsberg in 1971 and joined FC Schalke 04 as a scout in 2007, where he was heavily involved in developing young talent. In 2017, he moved to 1. FC Union Berlin as chief scout, was promoted to squad planner, and ultimately led the Irons to the Bundesliga.

The secret of his success

From Sauerland via Schalke to Union

Why does 1. FC Union Berlin seem to effortlessly compete with the big leagues? Why do so many top players come from the youth academy of FC Schalke 04? How can you be successful in the Bundesliga without compromising your skills? Anyone asking these questions will not be able to ignore Oliver Ruhnert. As sporting director and manager, he is one of the key architects of Berlin's success - and remains true to his roots: as a referee who officiates amateur games on the weekend, as parliamentary group leader of the Left Party in the Iserlohn city council. How does he juggle all of this? Why doesn't he do just one of these things? This book introduces him. With his words and those of companions, contemporary witnesses, colleagues and friends.
